Axial flow fans in welding booths create a continuous cross-draft that carries welding fumes away from the welder's breathing zone. The fan creates a directed airflow path from fresh air supply on one side to fume exhaust on the other, maintaining clean air at the work surface.

How It Works in This Application
Fresh Air Entry
Fresh air enters through a supply opening, creating airflow that sweeps across the work surface from behind the welder toward the exhaust side.
Fume Capture in Airstream
Welding fumes generated at the weld pool are immediately captured in the cross-draft airstream, preventing them from rising into the breathing zone.
Fume Transport to Exhaust
The contaminated airstream carrying welding fumes and smoke is drawn through the axial fan at the exhaust side of the booth.
Filtered or Direct Exhaust
In open booths, contaminated air is exhausted directly to atmosphere. In enclosed booths, a filter unit upstream of the fan captures particulates.

IS 3016 guidelines recommend a minimum face velocity of 0.5 m/s at the booth opening to capture welding fumes. For a standard 2m x 2m welding booth opening, this requires approximately 7,200 m3/hr. For heavier welding processes, higher velocities of 0.75 to 1.0 m/s are recommended.
Exhaust-only is the most common and recommended approach — the fan exhausts fume-laden air from the back of the booth while fresh air enters from the front around the welder. This creates a cross-draft that pushes fumes away from the breathing zone.
No. Standard domestic fans are not rated for the acidic, particulate-laden welding fume environment. Industrial-grade axial fans with epoxy-coated or SS construction, IP55 motor, and IS-compliant airflow capacity are required.
For stainless steel welding, fumes contain hexavalent chromium and nickel compounds which are highly corrosive. SS304 or FRP fan construction is recommended. A HEPA filter system is also recommended downstream.
Yes. Vayuvents supplies axial fans sized to work with filter media units in enclosed welding cabins. The fan is installed downstream of the filter to handle only cleaned air, extending fan service life.
Welding booth axial fans should be inspected monthly for fume deposits on the impeller which can cause imbalance. Impeller cleaning every 3 to 6 months is typical, with motor bearings checked annually.
