How It Works in This Application
Dust Generation at Source
Woodworking machines, grinding operations, cement handling, and pharmaceutical processing generate dust at the point of material cutting, grinding, or transfer.
Hood and Duct Capture
Collection hoods positioned at each dust source capture airborne dust particles in the airstream drawn by the centrifugal blower through supply ductwork.
Transport Through Ductwork
The dust-laden airstream is transported through the collection ductwork system to the filter unit, maintained at sufficient velocity to prevent duct settlement.
Filtration and Clean Air Exhaust
The dust-laden air passes through a baghouse, cartridge filter, or cyclone separator upstream of the centrifugal blower, which handles only clean filtered air.

Centrifugal blowers generate high static pressure needed to overcome collection hood, ductwork, and filter resistance in dust collection systems. Axial fans generate high airflow at low pressure and cannot overcome the resistance of typical dust collection systems. Centrifugal blowers โ particularly radial open impeller types โ are the correct choice for all industrial dust collection applications.
The radial (paddle wheel) open impeller is the best choice for dust collection because the open design allows dust particles, chips, and fibres to pass through the impeller without clogging. Backward-curved closed impellers are used for clean air applications only and will clog rapidly if used for direct dust-laden air handling.
Yes. Vayuvents supplies spark-resistant centrifugal blowers with non-sparking aluminium impellers and casing for combustible dust applications. These must be used with grounded ductwork and appropriate explosion relief venting on the filter. Contact us for a specific assessment of your combustible dust application.
Required capture velocity depends on the dust type and generation process: 0.5 to 1.0 m/s for light dusts like flour and pharmaceutical powders, 1.0 to 2.5 m/s for medium dusts like wood dust and grinding dust, and 2.5 to 10 m/s for heavy dusts like metal chips and stone dust. Vayuvents selects the blower capacity based on your specific dust type and hood configuration.
The blower should always be placed AFTER the filter โ this is called a suction system or negative-pressure system. Placing the blower before the filter forces dust-laden air through the blower impeller, causing rapid wear, imbalance, and clogging. Vayuvents designs all dust collection systems with the blower downstream of the filter.
